How to install an .apk file
An APK is an Android app installer. These Haynes Apps downloads support Android 8.0 or newer.
- Download on your phone. Visit haynesapps.win and tap Download Android app on the app you want. If you downloaded it on a computer, transfer the APK to your phone first.
- Open the download. Tap the completed download in your browser, or open Files / My Files → Downloads and tap the file ending in .apk. You do not need to unzip it.
- Allow this installation source if prompted. Tap Settings in the prompt, then turn on Allow from this source for the browser or file manager opening the APK.
- Install and launch. Return to the APK, tap Install, then Open. The app also appears in your phone’s app list.
- Turn the source permission back off. Usually: Settings → Apps → Special app access → Install unknown apps. Select the browser or file manager you allowed and turn off Allow from this source.
Need help installing?
Settings names vary by phone. If the download opens in Files rather than Chrome, permission applies to Files. If you see “App not installed,” check available storage, Android version, and that the download finished. For an update, install over the existing app to retain its saved data; uninstalling can erase progress.
If a security warning or device policy blocks installation, review the exact message with a parent or device administrator. Keep Play Protect enabled. You can use Open app in your browser instead.
Install downloads you intended to get from a source you trust. Children should ask a parent before changing installation permissions.
